A significant portion of the Ohio Graduation Test involves reading. This is true for all subject areas of the test, not just the reading section. Practicing good strategies can help you improve your score.

Slow Down
You are given two and a half hours for the reading section. Use the time you are given to read the passages thoroughly and completely.

Take Notes
You are permitted to write in your test booklet. Underline the topic sentence of technical passages. Write a brief summary or paraphrase for other types of passages. Try to determine two or three main points for the passage.

Key Words
When answering multiple choice questions that follow each passage, identify the key words in the answer choices and then look for similar key words in the reading passage. Pay attention to line references if the question stem refers you back to a particular section of the reading.

Predict Answers
As you read the question stems, try to answer them yourself before looking at the answer choices. If the answer you predicted is similar to one of the choices given, you've made the right choice.

Relax
You’re a tenth grader and these are tenth grade passages. You have the ability to do well, just trust yourself and calm down. If you’re unsure of the answer to one question, mark it in your test booklet and then move on. You have plenty of time to come back to it later in the test period. Just remember to skip the answer space in your answer booklet, too. Otherwise, you will wind up marking the correct answer in the wrong place and lose valuable points.
