Tenth grader Josh Lewis is learning the importance of detail at Marymount Hospital's Cardiology Department. His duties include answering the phone, scheduling appointments, updating patient charts, and completing insurance information. "This experience has taught me that the clerical work I do is vital since it leads to other steps in patient health care. I'm also getting great experience in working as part of a team and in developing my listening skills as I speak with patients," Josh stated.
Josh has also had the opportunity to observe heart catheterizations. "I was part of a team and watched patient vital signs on the monitor along with images of the heart," Josh explained. "My department also performs tests such as adenosine stress tests and holter monitor tests that help identify cardiac issues the patient may have. There is a Pulmonary Function Lab as well, so I've learned a lot about how the heart and lungs function."
Josh is in the Marymount Catholic Health Care Program at Trinity. He is also interested in law so he might combine the two disciplines by going to medical school and then on to law school to practice malpractice law. "I feel very fortunate to be taking the first step towards a medical/law degree already as a sophomore," he said.
Marymount Cardiology secretary and receptionist, Kathy Kelly-Stewart, has seen the growth in Josh and expects great things for him in the future. "Josh is a very good and conscientious employee who has caught on to the work quickly and has shown to have a good work ethic. He works within different computer programs entering information and making sure that patient charges are being done correctly," she said. "He is well liked and gets along with everyone. With his lofty goals of becoming a lawyer and possibly a physician, this attitude and drive will carry him far. He is smart and a joy to work with and we wish him luck with whatever he path he follows."
