Mock Trial team moves on in competition
Trinity's Mock Trial team, under the direction of teachers Nadine Pekarek and Gina Ramirez, competed with 33 other high school teams and advanced into regional competition. Congratulations are extended to team members Gabe Fischer, Jesea Molina, Dale Banas, McKenzie Merriman, Livia Raulinaitis, Steffanie Olson, Jason Banas, Kelsey Williams and Jasmine Lowery. McKenzie Merriman and Jesea Molina won awards as best attorney in their cases and Dale Banas won best witness.

Mock Trial is a statewide academic competition sponsored by the Ohio Council for Law Related Education. About 500 teams compete statewide at districts. They prepare both sides of a case with students participating as lawyers or witnesses and they compete against other schools in presenting each side of the same case. You must win both sides to go on to regional competition.

This year's case is Alex Leslie versus Erehwon High School. It is a first amendment freedom of speech case in which a student has been suspended from school over a blog that she created that was critical of her AP European History Teacher. The student is suing the school for violating her rights.

To prepare for competition, the team received case materials including witness statements, case law based on actual court cases, briefs which lay out each side of the case, and exhibits—this year including an excerpt from the blog and the school's disciplinary code. The Mock Trial team students wrote their own direct and cross questions and opening or closing statements. They then practiced against each other, meeting about three times a week for two-hour practices. During competition, each side of the case from Trinity presented their case against an opposing school. This year Trinity competed against teams from Solon and Cleveland Heights High Schools and won both cases.

Junior McKenzie Merriman has been in Mock Trial since her freshman year. "I enjoy Mock Trial and the way each of us has to be able to think on our feet," McKenzie explained. "It has taught me how to figure out people and how to get what I want from people. My favorite part is when the other team raises an objection to my question and I have to react quickly. The preparation, including understanding court procedure, memorizing pertinent laws, and writing statements and questions, is great academic preparation for my classwork at Trinity and for college. I also love the friendships I have made with like-minded students on our team."
