Spotlight on intern success: Maggie Halm
This week's Spotlight on intern success focuses on Maggie Halm, an intern in Trinity's Graphic Design Department. Maggie works with designer Patrick Straffen on producing print materials for businesses such as Marymount Child Care Center, The Village at Marymount and Spirit Services, a non-profit organization that contracts with Trinity for marketing and technology consulting for over 25 area Catholic elementary schools.

"I've learned so many things," Maggie states, "such as how to take a proper picture, shortcuts on a keyboard and the use of Adobe Creative Suite. Even more important, though, I'm learning how to communicate with people in a business-like manner, from the children at the Child Care Center to the adults whose material I am designing."

Straffen is proud of the progress Maggie has made in her internship position. "Maggie has really grasped the concept of the Pre-Professional Internship Program," he stated. "She is creating great work, taking pride in it and seeing how it is applied in the world around her."

Sr. Dorothy Ann Krolikowski, director of Marymount Child Care Center, was impressed with Maggie's work in designing her brochure. "She was an excellent listener as I explained the purpose of the brochure," Sr. Dorothy Ann said. "The information was put together well and the photography she did of the children was outstanding. Maggie represents Trinity High School well on her internship."

Some of the projects Maggie has completed so far include the Marymount Child Care Center brochure and direct mail postcards for Spirit Services-sponsored schools. "I feel really accomplished that my work is being used by businesses to solicit new patrons. I am starting to keep everything I have designed so that I will have a portfolio of my work to show to college admissions departments," Maggie explained.

A bonus for Maggie is that her internship is right at Trinity. "Even though I don't leave the campus, I'm working with clients from a variety of places. This lets me have lunch with my friends, but then return to a business environment."

Maggie plans to pursue a career as a graphic designer, architect or chef.
